Life.Lab: 198 Harbour Esplanade, Docklands
Life.lab is a mixed use eight storey building consisting of 91 offices and apartments designed around an internal atrium.
Construction began in late 2006 by Baulderstone Hornibrook 1 and it was completed in late 2008.2
Designed by architects Moull Murray3, it is inspired by the early 21st Century modern movement.
A regulation footprint building is set above a carpark podium. However what sets it apart externally is its use of vibrant colour on the facade materials, incorporating horizontal bands of blue, orange and zinc upper storeys with projecting vertical finial elements of green orange and red (columns) and a red fin separating balconies extending to the sky juxtaposed with rectangular segments of orange spanning a single storey near the corner and grey and white spanning multiple storeys on the upper levels. Windows are arranged in vertical bays and accompanied by glass balconies on the residential levels. A large cantilevered wing is a feature of the southern entryway at Docklands Drive. The design effect is very similar to the new County Court of Victoria building on Lonsdale Street.
