Neo 200 on Spencer: 200 Spencer Street, Melbourne

Neo 200 on Spencer is an 128 metre, 41 storey 371 apartment residential tower which was completed in 2007. Construction began in 2004 and took almost 3 years.  The architects were Hayball Leonard Stent Pty Ltd.  The building is broken up into ground level retail, 8 level podium/carpark and tower.

The podium design is of particular interest, with a geometric patterned and textured exposed concrete and a golden eye opening zig-zag pattern running down the northern facade.  Verandahs are staggered in sets along the Little Bourke Street facade and sets of windows are gradually angled to provide some complexity and interest.  Raw concrete is used extensively in the design and the dominating almost muscular effect on the tower (particularly viewed from the east) could be described as a post-modern brutalism, following a style pioneered in Melbourne by Nonda Katsalidis in the 1990s.
