Hotel Alexander (or Alexander’s Hotel) was opened in early 1927 and run by Alexander Hotel Pty Ltd. At the time it was billed as “Melbourne’s most modern hotel” a fully licenced hotel with 200 rooms each with their own bathroom. At eleven storeys it was one of Melbourne and Australia’s tallest and most prominent hotels at the time taking advantage of its proximity to Spencer Street railway station. 1 A 20th Century American style hotel it claimed to be one the first in Australia to offer modern air-conditioning.
Neo 200 on Spencer: 200 Spencer Street, Melbourne
Neo 200 on Spencer is an 128 metre, 41 storey 371 apartment residential tower which was completed in 2007.
Construction began in 2004 and took almost 3 years. The architects were Hayball Leonard Stent Pty Ltd. The building is broken up into ground level retail, 8 level podium/carpark and tower.
Old Age Building: 250 Spencer Street, Melbourne (demolished 2014)
The Old Age building on Spencer Street was purpose built for and occupied by The Age for over 40 years and is a redevelopment site. The building has gained notoriety for its uncompromising architecture and has been dubbed an eyesore by many. It has also earned the nickname (with political undertones) “Spencer Street Soviet” by Jeff Kennett former Premier of Victoria.1
